Boyero Parade in Venecia de San Carlos, Costa Rica

You never know what you may see here in Costa Rica. Driving from La Fortuna to Puerto Viejo- Sarapiqui we passed through the town of Venecia and were just in time for a parade.

As we arrived the whole town or so it seemed was gathered waiting to start the parade. We quickly pulled over so we could watch and enjoy what was happening.

The oxen were all lined up pulling carts called Boyeros. The Boyerso were used to haul coffee at one time.  After doing some reading the parade is a celebration of the history of the Boyeros and the ox driver's journey that they once made delivering the coffee. The trek took around 10 - 15 days on foot, along country mountain dirt roads.

Just driving these roads which are now paved I can not imagine how hard of a journey it must have been.

There were many smiling faces as the families were being pulled in the carts. They were happy to smile for us to get some pictures.

This gentlemen stopped for us to showed both the younger boy & us how to get the oxen to raise their heads.

The carts are all hand-painted and so beautiful. They are part of the Costa Rica history

What a treat for us to have been able to have been here just at the right time to experience a small part of Costa Rica history and culture.
