Night time Safari along the Sierpe River

Our next excursion that Guillermo arranged for us was a night time river tour. It was fantastic!

Ready for a nights adventure - This would be considered dressed up in the jungle.
Our ride for the night

The boat picked us up at the docks at 4:30pm.

David
Our guide today was David along with the boat captain. As we went down the river past town we stopped along the way viewing different birds, mammals, trees, and reptiles. David was so knowledgeable.

We got to watch a troop of Capuchin moving down the river.

We saw snake #4 a Tree Boa. We didn’t even know there was such a thing. Apparently they sleep in one spot for up to 3 weeks.

It was a beautiful ride as the sun was starting to set, nice, and cool. After a day where the temperature occurring to George’s phone felt like 109 a breeze made us feel almost cold.

We saw all the heron’s, the Blue heron, the Tiger heron, green heron, night heron, and the little blue heron.

The heron’s along with the white Ibis sleep on the bamboo stakes at night. They do this to feel the vibration of a predator that maybe coming.

There are so many White Ibis in groups in the bamboo David called it “Bamboo hotel.”

A real treat was getting to see the squirrel monkeys. There are 4 kinds of monkeys here in Costa Rica and this was the only ones we haven’t seen so far.

A pair of matching moths dropped in our boat.

Some of the other sightings were the greater fishing bat, long nose bats, opossum, Iguana, Caiman,  Purple Gallinule, Snowy Egret, Gray necked wood rail, , Forked tailed fly catcher, and Crocodile’s. That is just what I can remember.

Around 7:00pm we stopped in town for dinner. We sat out by river and enjoyed fresh snapper with salad, rice, and French fries.

Town

The restaurant also had internet so we were the couple not talking busy checking their phones.  The house has no internet so it was nice to touch base with the kids and family.

After dinner the tour continue looking for eyes in the dark.

We spotted many Caiman and Crocodiles. David even grabbed a baby caiman for us to see up close.

Also saw some crab eating raccoon and a common potoo.

We were dropped off around 9:00pm.  This was a highlight of our trip and I would highly recommend it.

The next adventure is the walk in the dark up to the house. We were equipped with head lamps and flash lights and surprising enough it didn’t bother me a bit. I think the more I see of what is out in the rainforest the more comfortable I become. The only thing that got us was once again the steepness of the climb and the bugs.
