Great Restaurants in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica

There are lots of reasons we love Puerto Viejo, the nature, the beaches, the people, and the restaurants. This small area many wonderful places to eat there is not enough days to try all of them. We started off the trip going to 3 of our favorites, El Refugio, Stashus Con Fuison, and Koki beach.
El Refugio is a small intimate place located in the jungle right near our house.  We had eaten there twice our last trip and were looking forward to having dinner there again.  It was just as amazing as our first trip. I had Tuna which was cooked to perfection. Octopus was a special that night and we tried it as well. The skirt steak was so tender and full of flavor. This is definitely one of the best in the area. Reservations recommended.

We also had dinner at Stashus Con Fuison twice and I couldn’t wait to return remembering all the flavors in the food there. They serve loco spicy chips which unfortunately they were out of the night we went.  George had the curried shrimp which was very tasty. I had the shrimp in Tamarind sweet & spicy sauce which was good but I thought a little too heavy on the sauce.

The meal was good but not as outstanding as I had remember it. Maybe just an off night for us or them. The server was very nice and we had lots of fun.
Koki beach is right in the middle of town and one of the biggest restaurants in terms of how many tables. They have a nice bar and seating area to enjoy some before dinner cocktails. Nice relaxing way to start an evening seating having a martini’s watching the people go by. Dinner was just perfect from appetizers to dessert. Three of us ordered Filet but with different toppings, mine was with Roquefort cheese. The Filets were cooked perfect, juicy, cut with a fork tender, excellent. Dessert we had bananas in a box. It is a must try! Excellent meal from start to finish.

Pura Gula is another small open air place surrounded by jungle that is very good. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu. I had the tuna.

Jungle love has only 4 tables so it is best to make a reservation. We emailed for reservations but the only time they had was 6:00pm which we took and very happy we did. The meal was amazing. Fresh made guacamole with homemade chips to start the meal. I had the Tokyo Tuna which is served with homemade tamarind juice, ginger, sesame seeds, soy sauce and a dollop of wasabi served over brown rice and steamed veggies. It was the best Tuna steak I ever had. The owners are a husband and wife team, him being the chief as well. Just loved the place.

La Pecora Negra was another must try for outstanding food and service.
If you want good Italian food Amimodo is the place. We had both lunch and dinner there. Both meals were very good. Homemade black squid raviolis stuffed with seafood was just delicious.

As for breakfast we found Rockin J’s. For us it was perfect, quick, inexpensive, and good. A egg, bacon, avocado, cheese sandwich $6.00.

How can you go wrong there?

All the restaurants are using the fresh ingredients & spice. It would be hard to get a bad meal in this area.
