First stop after picking up the car, which is never quick is La Fortuna. Not sure why it takes so long to get the car but it does, we were there a good hour. They sell you on the peace of mind insurance which covers you for everything that may happen while you are there. Which after you drive around a bit you are happy to have, peace of mind.
The drive from the San Jose Airport to Arenal is about 3 to 4 hours depending on trucks and weather. This trip it took us every bit of 4 hours due to slow drivers & rain.
One of the guys at dollar recommended a nice spot to stop about an hour into the drive for lunch, Los Lenos. The directions were perfect and the lunch was typical Costa Rican food and very inexpensive. Oh course no one spoke a word of English but we managed.
We are staying for a couple nights in La Fortuna at the Arenal Springs Resort & Spa which is right outside the town and has wonderful views of the Volcano, along with hot springs, and beautiful gardens through out the resort, making it a birders paradise.
We had booked 2 superior rooms but on arrival they upgraded us to Jr. Suites, with a huge bathroom that had both a inside and outside shower garden shower. I love a outside shower and this one even had hummingbirds in the flowers.
A Jacuzzi with views of the Volcano. I am not one for a jacuzzi but after a long hike it felt really nice.
The rooms are extremely comfortable and the resort a perfect location for exploring all that the area has to offer.
The hot springs here at the resort are nice to relax in even in the rain.
