A day trip to Cano Island, Costa Rica

The howlers woke us this morning at 3:30am. This was the first I have heard them since leaving Puerto Viejo so it was a happy sound. Listening to the jungle wake up in the morning is something very special maybe not for everyone but I sure do love it.
The house has no coffee maker. You make coffee the tradition way they do in Costa Rica by using a Chorreador. It consisted of an unvarnished wooden frame with a round hole at the top where a wire rimmed cloth filter or strainer was placed.

.  You put the grounded coffee in the bag, pour boiling water slowly into it and let it drop into the cup. They have been doing one cup coffee long before Keurig and 10 times better.
Guillermo has set us up on a snorkeling trip to Cano Island for the day. The boat picked us up at the boat dock at 8:30am.

The guide today is Stanley along with the boat captain and 8 other people. The trip down the Sierpe River to the Ocean takes about one hour.

The ride down the river is beautiful every direction you look all you see is thick dense rainforest.

We did get to see a few Capuchin s in the trees along the river by our house.

You come to where the River meets the Ocean and then it is a 1/2 hour ride to Cano Island.

Once at the island we were given our snorkeling gear and told to jump in. The snorkeling was really great. I saw fish I have never seen before. Stanley took my camera and got some wonderful shoots of many of them.

We than went to the beach to relax a bit

before going to another spot to snorkel some more.

This spot the current was very rough and it was hard to keep up.

A few times we were going nowhere and swimming hard. The fish were great to see but it was not something we could do for long without getting overly exhausted.

For lunch they took us to Boca Sierpe which is the beach where the ocean and the river meet. It was a nice lunch fresh watermelon, pineapple, tomatoes, cucumbers, and cheese.

The no- see- ums were brutal and I got eaten alive.

We then made our way back down the river, stopping to see 2 sloths and a trip through the mangroves. This is the largest Mangrove in all of central America   .

Great day on the water.
