Panama City is really made up of 3 cities, the original city, old city, & the modern city.
Our tour took us through each & explains the history. It was a great way to get to know the city. Anyone coming here definitely do the city tour.
Once you get the hang of things the city is pretty easy to get around. Taxis plentiful and very inexpensive, $5.00 will get you most places you want to go. This is not a city you want to drive yourself, drivers are just crazy. Even in the taxis I had a few eye closing experiences. Traffic can be bumper to bumper in many areas. We found it was best to walk a few blocks from the hotel then find a taxi.
The city is very safe to walk around day or night. Like any place there are areas to avoid but most likely they are places you would go anyway.
