Just a little south of Samara we discovered another of Costa Rica's little treasures, Carrillo Beach.
It is long white sand beach, lined with coconut palm tree, which gives you lots of shading options to sit and enjoy the beauty that surrounds you. Shade is a must, the sun is very strong. The sand gets very hot as the day goes on, so hot people run from the shade of the palm tree to the water. I tried to wear flip flops down but it still gets in between, running seems to work best.
The beach is protected by rocky headlands, providing calm, warm water that you can swim in. Many of Costa Rica beaches are great for surfing but can be a little rough to swim in. We enjoyed spending a few days here. The water is clear and we saw many fish along with a few string rays riding the waves.
There are no restaurants, bars, or building on the beach but no worries if you get thirsty the local vendor carts go up and down the street with lots to choose from. We meet Edgar one day who came by early with free simples of his ceviche. He goes out spear fishing just off the rocks at the end of the beach. He brings home the nights catch and his wife makes a delicious ceviche with it.
Today's ceviche was octopus, squid, parrot fish, with onions and peppers. It was excellent. I had a cup for lunch. What is better then fresh ceviche on the beach?
He told us Playa Carrillo was one of the 25 best secret beaches in the world. I can understand why.
