The first nest was laid June 8, 2014 and typically the turtles start to hatch about 60 days later. It can be as long as 90 days but in years past its never been more than about 75 days. The temperatures this past summer have been very mild low 80's and high 70's along with a bit of rain making the nesting season a little longer then in years past.

The first one to hatch! |
Today day 77 and finally the first little turtle hatched out of one of the nest.
Not long after 3 more from 2 different nest appeared. What we have all been waiting for, baby turtles.
They are so tiny and actually start moving pretty fast for just popping out of the ground.
There are 112 nest at the hatchery which is somewhere over 2000 eggs, there is a official count but I am not sure what it is.
Once the turtles are out they are put in a small pool for a day or 2 just to give them a bit of a head start before releasing them into the bay.
It has been very exciting to be part of this project. Can not wait to see how many more are born today.
That's so neat!!
