Happiness is a purple bike in Bocas

There are a couple ways to get around the isle Colon, taxi, foot, water taxi, or bike. A taxi cost $1.00 and there are always plenty of them. The walk to the town of Bocas del Toro or just Bocas as the locals say is about 15 minutes from Koko and very safe. There is also a grocery store not very far from Koko. We got 6 bottles of water and 3 bottles of white wine for $25.00, things are inexpensive here.

Saturday we woke up to a sunny day and thought it would be a good day to take the bikes we had rented (7.00 a day) to go explore the island.

We started in Bocas. Bocas is a funky little place made up of shops, restaurants, hotels, hostels, tour companies, government offices, and homes.

The whole town is only 7 blocks and most of the hotels, restaurants, & shops are on the main street, many sitting right on the water. It does not take you long to walk the town and see all that it has to offer.
We were told that Playa Bluff was the nicest & biggest beach on the island, which is where we headed next, by bike.

It as a nice ride on the road right along the ocean but the road stops and it becomes first sand, than a very rough, rocky path for the next 2 miles or more.

Not really sure where we were going we just kept on riding until we found ourselves at Playa Bluff lodge that has a pool.

It was like a little oasis after a long rough bumpy, hot ride. Once in the pool we opted to spend the rest of the day here.

The lodge is very secluded with the ocean in front and jungle behind it.

They offered a jungle hike with a guide which we decided to take after lunch. The hike was 2 hours into the jungle. It’s been a while since I have jungle hiked and forgot how hot and hilly it can be.

We got to see the green frogs, a couple tree bats, the yellow tail bird with its unique call, and heard the howlers but did not see them. Our guide was great and very knowledgeable about the different trees and wildlife.

The hike was great but it took everything out of me and we still had to bike back.
The glass of wine at sunset was much deserved after such an active day. It was an early to bed night.
