No trip to St Maartin is complete without a visit to Maho
beach to watch the planes land and depart. We arrived early, set up our chairs,
took a nice stroll along the beach, and within an hour the beach was packed with people.
The runway is just off the beach and its one of the few places you can actually stand that close. When the planes come in for a landing it almost feels like they are going to come right on top of you. Once they land the wind just blows everything behind it all over.
The first time we were here their were not many people on the beach and we were right under the planes. The feeling of the KLM 747 coming right at me was something I won't ever forget. This time with the crowds we seat a little off to the side so we could watch and not get all our stuff blown everywhere.
There were 5 cruise ships in port on the day we went which made people watching an exact added bonus. Between the waves crushing on to the beach pulling down those who were too close, the water washing up the beach soaking everyone's stuff, and the planes blowing those who were directly behind during landings it was very entertaining day. We tried to warn a few about the water coming up high on certain waves but they knew best.
Not to mention the group of German man from the ship all of which thought nothing of getting totally naked to put on their swim suits. It all added to the fun.
But the real thrill comes when KLM 747 comes in for a landing. Today the pilot gave us a nice fly before landing.
The take off are for the the real thrill seekers. Getting right behind a jet for take off when the engines get turned on high gear is something to be experienced. This time I went to the fence for KLM 747 take off and it definitely gets the adrenaline going. The shear force.

Last week fter KLM landed it turned a little to much to the left and blew out 17 cars windows in a parking area near the airport.
We just love Maho Beach. It is always a favorite stop when we visit the island each year. Did you eat at the Sunset Bar while there?
