The town of The Churchill Manitoba Canada

The town of Churchill is located on the edge of the Hudson Bay at the mouth of the Churchill River.
The only way to get to Churchill is either by plane or by train. This makes it a pretty isolated place.

It is between the tundra of the north and the boreal forest to the south.

The main street in town is Kelsey Boulevard where most of the hotel, restaurants, and shops are. The population of people who live here year round is 850. During tourist times such as during bear season people come from all over to work for 6 - 8 weeks. Once the season is over around Nov 20th, most of the hotels & restaurants shut down until spring.
Looking towards down town from the Lazy Bear Lodge The hotel is located at the one end of town.
In the middle of town

The Seaport Hotel one of the few places that stays open year round. They even have live music most nights.
The main store to buy everything you need.

Yes it's $9.99 for a gallon of milk. With everything being shipped in things are expensive

The town has a centre complex which is a group of buildings all connected that houses the school, library, pool, arena, curling club, gym, cafeteria, hospital, pharmacy, movie cinema, indoor playground, and the town administration. There are 200 students in the school but last year only 1 from the graduating class. Most go to Winnipeg for high school.

Port of Churchill. Canada's only arctic seaport.

The Polar Bear Jail

When bears do come into town, which does happen first they try to scare the bears by firing cracker shots. If this doesn't get the bear to move on they will tranquilize the bear and bring them to the holding center or polar bear jail. The bears are held here for a few days and than flown by helicopter further north away from town. The jail can hold up to 22 bears. The bears are keep isolated from people to avoid a familiarity or dependence on humans. You can view only the outside. There was a bear drop the day we where there but missed seeing it. A sow and her cub were moved.
