Looking for something fun to do this weekend in Philadelphia?
You are in luck because Sunday June 5, 2011 is the Philly Bike Race (The TD Bank Philadelphia International Cycling Championship), or what some call the Manayunk Wall Race. For the last 27 years Philadelphia has been host to this International Cycling Championship Race. The race starts at 9:00am in front of the Art Museum along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. It continues along Kelly Drive and thru the streets of Manayunk, with its legendary Manayunk Wall, and then to Lemon Hill. The race is a 14.4 mile circuit that the cyclist do 10 laps for a total of 156 miles.
We have gone to the race every year for the past 17 years and are looking forward to another great day in Philadelphia. We have watched from the streets of Manayunk, partied our way up the wall, and for a few years had picnics in Fairmont Park at Lemon Hill.
One year we even got up early and rode the 14.4 mile circuit as part wellness challenge before the race. I was unable to ride my bike up the wall, in fact I only made it a few pedals in before I had to get off the bike and walk the rest. Even walking the wall was a challenge. My husband, George who does bike, did make it up but it still was a bit of a challenge. It was great way to see the course from a cyclist view. If this is something that interests you they will be doing the Wellness Challenge again this year.
A few weeks ago @Procyclingtour had a twitter contest “what makes Philadelphia a great place for the race?”
@limintime tweet was -
@Procyclingtour the fans make #phillyrace. Lemon Hill and The Wall are a must visit for anyone on race day. Its Philly's proudest day.
He was one of the winners.
Now this year we will be watching the race from the Top of the Wall in the VIP tent. Thanks @Procyclingtour
See you on the Wall on Sunday!
Here is the websites for anyone interested in more information on the race.
